'Search Party' Finds Its Stars, Begins Shooting Next Week

Frequent Todd Phillips collaborator Scot Armstrong is making his feature directorial debut on the Universal comedy.

Feature comedy Search Party is finally ready to roll before cameras.

T.J. Miller, Adam Pally and Thomas Middleditch are set to star in the project, which will begin shooting next week in Louisiana.

Universal and Gold Circle, which partnered on the surprise hit Pitch Perfect, are co-financing the movie, which serves as the directorial debut of frequent Todd Phillips cohort Scot Armstrong.

Universal will distribute the movie while Gold Circle produces.

Party centers on two roommates who go to great and dangerous lengths to save their friend Nardo, who is naked and stranded in Mexico. Mike Gagerman and Andrew Waller wrote the script, which was on the 2010 Blacklist.

Miller will play a fast-talking and slobbish guy in his 20s who lives to gamble, drink and hook up. He jumps into action when he hears Nardo is in a bind and recruits his more upwardly mobile roommate for the rescue mission.

The project was set up at Columbia when it was titled Road to Nardo and came close to getting off the ground last year. It even had Miller cast before the plug was abruptly pulled. Months later, it resurfaced at Universal and Gold Circle, seeking a new cast. Miller was able to come back.

Paul Brooks is producing for Gold Circle, with COO Scott Niemeyer executive producing.

Also producing is Neal H. Moritz, via his Original Film banner, alongside Armstrong and Ravi Nandan for American Work Inc.

Armstrong, whose writing credits include Old School, Road Trip and The Hangover Part II, also rewrote this script. Andrew Waller and Mike Gagerman wrote the original spec.

Party will be the first toplining role for Miller (WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, Jackoway Tyerman), a stand-up comedian whose feature debut was the J.J. Abrams-produced creature feature Cloverfield. His recent credits include comedies Get Him to the Greek and Our Idiot Brother.

Pally (CAA, 3 Arts and Del Shaw) is one of the stars of ABC’s Happy Endings who recently wrapped the indie comedy The To Do List with Aubrey Plaza.

Middleditch (WME, manager Kirsten Ames and Schreck Rose) has made a name for himself with appearances in numerous comedy shorts. He also has appeared in feature comedies such as The Campaign with Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis and Fun Size.

Universal executive vp production Scott Bernstein and creative executive Jay Polidoro are overseeing.
